20 May 2008

1 Sam 30:21 Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow David, and who had been left at the brook Besor. And they went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him. And when David came near to the people he greeted them. 22 Then all the wicked and worthless fellows among the men who had gone with David said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except that each man may lead away his wife and children, and depart.” 23 But David said, “You shall not do so, my brothers, with what the Lord has given us. He has preserved us and given into our hand the band that came against us. 24 Who would listen to you in this matter? For as his share is who goes down into the battle, so shall his share be who stays by the baggage. They shall share alike.” 25 And he made it a statute and a rule for Israel from that day forward to this day.

What is your response? Will you be like the man who refuse to share the spoil with those who did not go for battle, or will you be like David, who share equally with those who go went and those who stayed?

I believed David like God look at the heart. It was not because the 200 left behind did not follow David - they were too exhausted to continue. They did at first, but probably cannot made it any further. Even David was exhausted when he met the Egyptian.

I did not know fr sure what David statute was. For it would be that unless you try and that the Lord bless - you will still gain your share.

The first part is all about your attitute and the second is about God.

I pray Lord, that all that I have - let my attitute be right - right towards my God, right towards my neighbours.

What is God trying to teach me?

The answer lie in verse 23:with what the Lord has given us. He has preserved us and given into our hand the band that came against us.

Those who went fought the battle - hard work, but it was the Lord who preserved - no lives was lost. They claimed back the spoil - nothing was lose, either big or small. Again, unless the Lord who preserved - the people would fight hard and though won the battle and defeated the enemies, but only to realized that all their loved ones had died. In such a case, the battle was in vain and therefore made no difference from those who fight and those who did not.

A number of time, we give credit to ourself - how hard we work and how much is the rewards that we deserved. We forget - the horse is prepared for battle, but the victory belong to God.

The objective of the battle is not for the spoil, but for retriving their love one. We fought battles and work hard - what is the objective. We lose sight of the intend.

The spoil that they obtained was not originally planned, the Lord bless and they got more than they expected.

On the contrary, will this breed laziness and in future - no need to work and wait for the victory and enjoy the spoil?
